Wissota 100 Race of Champions Qualifying Night
Race of Champions Qualifier Brings Strong Cars to Norman County Raceway
By Mike Spieker
ADA, MN (July 25)- A field of 66 drivers made the haul to Norman County Raceway for the annual Race of Champions Qualifier, presented by 4 Corners Construction and Tubby’s Tavern. All the heavy hitters were in attendance, looking to lock in a spot into the WISSOTA 100 in Huron, SD.
Tyler Peterson, James Tandeski, Luke Johnson and Justin Jones were all victorious in Wissota AMSOIL Dirt Track Series competition.
James Tandeski took the lead from Ryan Pommerer with five laps to go in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. He made the pass on the low side of turns three and four, but was never able to pull away from Pommerer. With three laps remaining, the caution came out putting Pommerer right on the rear bumper of Tandeski’s #7 machine. On the restart, Pommerer pulled even with Tandeski and regained the top spot as they crossed the line with the white flag being displayed. Tandeski got a big run on the low side of turn two and pulled up alongside of Pommerer. Both drivers drove their cars hard into turn three, Tandeski found the tacky dirt on the low side once again and won the drag race to the finish line by a mere half car length.
The WISSOTA Mod Four feature saw Luke Johnson of Glyndon, MN put an end to Troy Kuehl’s three race winning streak. Johnson led all 15 laps, Kuehl settled for second, Jim Erdmann, Aaron Wetterlin, and Bryce Bjerken rounded out the top five.
Savanna Johnson, step-daughter of World of Outlaw champion Donny Schatz, jumped in her Midwest Modified for the first time running the NCR Trophy Class and took home the win.
It seemed as though running in the top five of the WISSOTA Modified feature was almost a bad thing. It all began when Blake Jegtvig looped his machine around in turn two while in the second position. Then on lap eight, leader Austin Arneson had to pull off the speedway due to an apparent motor issue. Justin Jones then inherited the lead and had a very fast Cody Erickson in second. Erickson started to reel in Jones in the closing laps, but just when he got to within striking distance, smoke began to spew from the back of his Keystone Light #1X. A couple laps later Erickson took his car back to the trailer and Jones cruised on to visit KRJB/ KRJM Victory Lane.
23 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds made up the field of the 20 lap main event. Rich Pavlicek held the top spot until the lap seven restart where he got hit from behind, spun and collected six other cars. Among others, Pavlicek had to go to the work area to make repairs on his vehicle and restarted the race in 19th. Within three laps he sliced and diced his way up to fifth. Pavlicek was able to get by two more drivers before he ran out of laps and ended his miraculous comeback by finishing third. Tyler Peterson held off Ryan Cousins for the final 13 circuits for his second win at NCR this year and fifth win overall.
Next week’s Thursday Night Thunder will be School Night. Area school bus drivers will be racing school buses, plus wear any of your school’s apparel to get $2 off of admission.
