Skytland gets 3rd win at Norman County Raceway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, MN(August 15)- The pits were filled with 61 race teams ready for another night of Norman County Raceway’s Thursday Night Thunder which featured the $1000-to-win Sander’s Metal Products of Fargo Modified Challenge.

James Tandeski, Rich Pavlicek, Rob VanMil, and Cody Skytland were victorious in AMSOIL Dirt Track Series action.

The past week for Rich Pavlicek involved him blowing up his motor last Thursday at NCR, picking up the feature win the next night at River Cities Speedway, and then blowing up his backup motor at Buffalo River Race Park two nights later.

The Casselton, ND driver started sixth in the Northwest Truck and Trailer WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, but it didn’t take him long to find he way to the front. On the lap four restart Pavlicek powered his way from third to the lead by the time the field made their way to the backstretch. Pavlicek led the remainder of the race while Tyler Peterson bested Rick Hamel and Tyler Hall in the battle for the runner up spot.

Ryan Schow pulled out a spin-and-win in the NCR Trophy Class. Schow looped his machine in turns three and four with a couple laps to go, but still managed to pull off the victory.

Kyle Dykoff and Durand Peterson sat on the front row of the TDS Trucking WISSOTA Street Stock feature which had four cautions before they were able to complete the first lap. Rick Schulz jumped out to the early lead, but was met with a challenge from James Tandeski on lap four. Tandeski took the lead on high side on the track, but Schulz stayed right there with him battling on the bottom. Schulz started to catch Tandeski’s gray #7 machine, but ran out of time as Tandeski picked up his third win of the year at NCR.

Two-time WISSOTA Mod Four national champion, Rob VanMil entered the night with only a one point lead over Aaron Wetterlin in the

NCR points standings. In the early going of the feature event, it looked as though VanMil might lose the points lead to Wetterlin. Wetterlin had a comfortable lead with a clean race track in front of him when he suddenly pulled his Mod Four into the infield with an apparent mechanical problem with four laps to go. VanMil then inherited the lead and cruised around the 3/8th mile track for his fourth win at NCR of the season.

A strong field of 20 WISSOTA Modifieds made up the field for the Sander’s Modified Challenge. The race began with two-time WISSOTA national champion, Blake Jegtvig grabbing the lead from the pole, but when he led the field down the back straightaway, he immediately pulled the black #2 into the infield and that was the end of his night. The new leader, Rick Jacobson, found himself in the middle of a U-Motors Racing sandwich on the lap two restart with Austin Arneson on the outside and Cody Skytland down low. Arneson grabbed the lead on the next lap, but the race was far from over. Arneson and Skytland battled side by side, inches away from

each other for the remainder of the race. With just a handful of laps to go, Skytland made a move under Arneson, but didn’t quite have the #10A cleared before he moved up the track and the two teammates made contact. It only resulted in a crunched up quarter panel on Skytland’s car, but that didn’t slow him down any as he was able to hold off Arneson’s last ditch effort on the last lap to visit KRJB/KRJM Victory Lane.

Next week is Family Night at Norman County Raceway and will feature the Blaine Brother’s WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series. For more information, visit
