Norman County Raceway Kicks Off 2014 Season

By Mike Spieker

ADA, MN (May 22) – After a very cold and rainy spring, the sun finally came out, the dirt dried up and the race fans were treated to a relatively warm season opener at Norman County Raceway. Aaron Olson, Rob VanMil, Aaron Wetterlin, and Jim Geringer took home the hardware in WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series action.

With five laps to go in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, pole sitter Rob VanMil had a hard charging Rich Pavlicek reeling him in for the lead. Just as Pavlicek peaked to the inside of VanMil, however, the yellow flag flew for a spin. On the ensuing restart, VanMil got a good jump, but once again Pavilcek was able to close in on VanMil within a lap. As they crossed the line with two laps to go, VanMil had a one car length lead over Pavlicek, but now Pavlicek had a contender who wanted to take away the second position. Pavlicek and Davey Mills of Bemidji, MN battled side-by-side for remaining two laps which was just VanMil needed to pull away and take the win. Pavlicek held off Mills for second, while Tyler Peterson and Tyler Hall rounded out the top five.

Aaron Wetterlin took the point early on in the WISSOTA Mod Four feature and led all 15 circuits around the 3/8th mile Norman County Raceway for the victory. Bryce Bjerken, Corry VanMil, Luke Johnson and Brandon Ferris all finished in the top five.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks saw Jim Geringer take the lead from James Tandeski on the lap three restart after the two drivers made contact with each other. Geringer then checked out from the field and claimed the win over Ryan Pommerer, Tandeski, Kyle Dykhoff and matt Hilton.

Dano Ostrander got the holeshot into turn one in the WISSOTA Modified feature, but Aaron Olson came from fourth to lead lap number one. Olson held off the strong field of Modifieds for all 20 laps to visit KRJB/KRJM Victory Lane. Cody Erickson, Jamie Trautner, Ostrander, and Michael Johnson rounded out the top five finishers.

The second night of Thursday Night Thunder continues next Thursday night, May 29 with racing beginning at 7:00. Also scheduled next week at NCR is the first ever IMCA Saturday Night Shootout on May 31. IMCA Modifieds, Northern SportsMods, Compact Sports, INEX Legends, and NCR Pure Stocks will all be in action for the first of four Saturday Night races at NCR this summer.
