Malmlov Picks Up Big Modified Victory at Norman County Raceway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, MN (May 29)- Hot temperatures and high winds had the Norman County Raceway track officials working extra hard on the racing surface Thursday night, but come feature time the track was smooth and slick just like the drivers like it. Dev Malmlov, Tyler Peterson, Aaron Wetterlin, and Ryan Pommerer all took the AMSOIL Dirt Track Series checkered flag.

Malmlov and Aaron Holtan led the 16 car Christian Brother’s Ford WISSOTA Modified field to the green flag. Malmlov jumped out to the early lead down the backstretch while fourth place starter Jamie Trautner moved up to second as the first lap was completed. Malmlov held the lead around the low side of the track until the lap 11 restart where he made a mistake on the low side and allowed Trautner to pull even with him down the back stretch. Malmlov did his best to hold off Trautner, but the high side eventually prevailed and Trautner took over the point. A caution with seven laps to go put Malmlov right on the back bumper of Trautner’s #128 with one more shot to regain the lead. On the restart, Malmlov dove to the inside of Trautner in turn one and got a great run off of turn number two. The two veteran drivers ran side-by-side for three consecutive laps before the Moorhead, MN native, Malmlov, cleared Trautner with four circuits remaining. Once Malmlov recovered the top position, he checked out from the field, and visited KRJB/KRJM Victory Lane in Jake Bitker’s #91B at the track that Bitker promotes and operates. Trautner came home in second, followed by the defending NLRA Late Model champion Dustin Strand, Michael Johnson, and Bryce Borgen. The win was Malmlov’s eighth career win at NCR and his first since 2007.

“I was trying to stay on the bottom and I cut it too low and I had to slow down or else I would have hit a tire and that’s when (Trautner) got by me,” Malmlov said after the race. “I thought (Trautner) would run the bottom and take my lane, because that’s normally what people do, but maybe Jamie’s car wasn’t working down there and I was able to get him back.”

The defending NCR track champion Tyler Peterson led from green flag to checkered flag in the Northwest Truck & Trailer WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. “TPO” drove his #1TPO machine passed Andy Wagner, Gannon Miller, and Michael Griffin to take the lead on lap one from the fourth starting position and took the victory by nearly a half lap over Rob VanMil.

A three car battle for the lead between Jim Erdmann, Corry VanMil and Aaron Wetterlin ensued at the drop of the green flag during the Finely Motors WISSOTA Mod Four Feature. VanMil led laps two and three before Wetterlin and Erdmann took over and made it a two horse race to the finish. Wetterlin out dueled Erdmann’s Stars & Strikes Bowling #2 for his second win in as many races at NCR. VanMil finished third with Payton Gordon and Brandon Ferris rounding out the top five.

Travis Robertson and James Tandeski led the stout TDS Trucking WISSOTA Street Stocks as the green flag flew. The rookie Robertson got loose in the slick part of turn one and nearly spun out, which allowed Ryan Pommerer of Oriska, ND to slide by and challenge Tandeski for the lead. Tandeski came around to lead the opening lap, but the Dakota Cat #5P of Pommerer muscled by the Christine, ND driver and went on to take the win. Tandeski edged Rick Schulz at the line for second, Adam Burrows was fourth followed by the season opener winner Jim Geringer.

After a last lap, last corner come from behind victory in the heat race, Katie Ahrndt came home second behind Bryce Mueller in the IMCA Sport Compact feature.

Paul Colvin topped Todd Gettel, Axel Beckman, Dylan Leroux, and Dennis Hopper in the NCR Trophy Class.
